It really isn’t anything to be jealous about. I was jealous that my sister didn’t get hers til she was 15 and I got mine at 12 which meant 3 more years of the grief of that than she had.
I never understood this. I had gotten mines at ten, I was still in 5th Grade and yet all that first week the girls in my class asked me how it was. I was just honest with them, it was painful and embarrassing. I had to leave class every two hours that first day and I had to keep spares close to me. It was like being potty-trained all over again but I wasn’t dealing with pee.
I don’t recall being this excited, in fact, just the opposite. Add to this I was very irregular, which meant I had to stop wearing anything white. I recall once in high school I had just had my period the previous week, and dared to wear white slacks, only to start again. What an embarrassment. Turns out I had an ovarian cyst, but we didn’t find that out for several years later.
This brings to mind the fact that in most (all?) cultures (as far as I know, anyway) a big deal is made of a girl “becoming a woman”. Even in our modern day Western society, it is so recognized in many ways (don’t many families have “parties” or some sort of recognition?)… even if it a complete secret to us clueless men. However, in our society, there isn’t anything even remotely like the “coming of age” ceremonies that so many (often “primitive”) cultures have for boys/men! I think we lost something along the line with that (the closest thing I can think of for a boy – at least when I was that age [in the 1960’s] – is getting his first driver’s license, unless you want to count getting drafted into the military!).

Jealousy does not become you, Bernice. Not even if Luann flaunts the fact she already menstruates.

I’m a guy but I don’t think girls are that happy about having a period.

I prayed for many years for menopause so my period would stop. I got my wish, but now I’ve had hot flashes for going on 12 years.
