Strictly speaking, slavery was never completely abolished in the United States. The thirteenth amendment states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. " (emphasis added). The United States has the largest prisoner population in the world, and every one of them is legally a slave.
