mom: i've kept all the cards our kids have made for us over the years. here's my mother's day collection...
mom: and here's your father's day line.
dad: i made my dad the same card...
Once, years ago, in a moment of weakness, I took a homeless teenage kid with no family into my house. I told him he was welcome to stay as long as he went to school and stayed out of trouble. (He did.) Several months passed. On a certain Sunday in June, he handed me a small package without a word, and went away. There was a very nice necktie (from a charity shop) inside. I shut myself in my bedroom and cried for a half-hour.. Today he is 30 years old and has two college degrees. I expect i will get another necktie from the greatest son anyone ever had by accident.
