About ten years a very beautiful girl and I agreed we wouldn’t wear a phone for anybody for less than a hundred grand a year.

Well, I barely use mine. This little bitty creepy thingie certainly hasn’t won my heart. The non-digital desk phones actually sounded like human voices. And it was possible to have an intelligent conversation on a land line, because you could pick up the nuances of the voice. All gone.

Now everybdy has a phone all the time. Nobody has much to say. “’Sup?” “Nothing here.” “What’s with you?” LIstening in on other peoples’ phone call is a study in mammals reduced to grunting at long distances from fear and inner withdrawal from reality…“Are you there?”

Most of the cell phone calls I’m forced to listen to other making…convey little more information than,“I’m here, are you OK?”
