Nothing like an all-consuming passion and discovering you have absolutely no idea what to do with the result. The philosopher Wittgenstein gave up engineering to become a philosopher. He eventually claimed to have solved all the major problems of philosophy. He then declared that philosophy poses interesting questions but that there is nothing useful that can be done with the answers. He went back to teaching and encouraged his students to do anything, anything but become an academic.
