I didn’t see a cafeteria until junior high school (what’s now called middle school.) In elementary school we went home for lunch and came back after (which seemed like a dirty trick.) The few kids who couldn’t do that could eat in the school kitchen/lounge area that was mostly for teachers- some of whom went over to the high school cafeteria to eat.
But every other comic and TV show has grade school kids eating in cafeterias, until I wonder if ours was an unusual situation. It was a very modern (for the 1960s) post-war school building. Large, many classrooms, no single room schoolhouse. Any of those in our area were museums. We also did not have lockers until junior high- each classroom had a communal coat closet- but again, comics and TV show otherwise.
So here we are with second grade kids in a cafeteria, which I never experienced. My question is: how many people who went to grade school in the suburbs of the 1960s DID eat in a cafeteria?
