Since World War II we have won only one War – the Gulf War and that was because we had a clear enemy, a clear goal, and Bush Sr. took the time to build International support, let his generals develope their plan and put it into operation, and then HAD SENSE ENOUGHT TO STOP BEFORE WE GOT MIRED IN TRYING TO FIX A COUNTRY WE BROKE.
Naturally, Bush Sr. himself being a veteran of…
World War II.
Also, we’ve made countless enemies over the last
couple of decades by short-sightedly ( and repeatedly)
backing the” enemy of our enemy” in whatever conflict
they are involved with, then walking away when it suits
us, even if our exit - because of the timing - can be
accurately defined as abandonment.
scooter- Nixon ran the “hot war” longer than LBJ, but yes, the whole thing was a fiasco, but not nearly as stupid as invading Iraq.
Any decent military leader also has known, throughout history, that if you go into a battle, you need an exit strategy other than just getting all your troops killed in an ambush.
Yes, there have been a lot of incompetent military leaders.
Church - Study the history of War – Russia defeated both Napoleon and Hitler with a long retreat – Mao won in China with his “Long Retreat”, and many battles and wars have been won by drawing the enemy in with a retreat until you have them were you want.
For the Russians it was a scorch earth policy. This way the enemy couldn’t use the natural resources of the conquered territories to replenish themselves. With Napoleon I think he attacked at the worst time of the year with the blizzards and all.
And don’t forget Che Guevara’s shoot the enemy base camp one time and go home strategy. It was very effective for keeping your enemies awake all night and having them get paranoid all the time.

^ hi bueller, as a country, we have a mighty fine history of contradictory behavior dependent upon the “leanings” of the tyrant in power.
