Lila assumes he’s gay because he seems to match up with stereotypes. If a man and a woman in love want to be married the Church will do so. This is an example of anti-Catholic bias based on ignorance of the facts.
Raised Catholic, bailed out as soon as I turned 18. Do not want anything to do with “organized” religion. One look at the world and you will understand,
Church marriage doesn’t usually matter much to gays I know, including me and my partner. We want legal marriage – a whole different recognition. I don’t think people understand that.
Raised Catholic and proud of it. I feel sorry for people who don’t understand the Church and its teachings, or who can’t put the abuse scandal into proper context (did you know that public school teachers abuse children at a rate between three and ten times higher than Catholic priests? No? Not surprised. Do the research). By and large, Lila’s Catholicism is a joke prop in this strip. Normally the jokes are harmless. This one, unfortunately, raises the prospect of perpetuating serious misunderstanding.

You’d think the priest would gladly marry them in the misguided belief it would “straighten” out the man.

Ahnk: Not necessarily. If one is not Catholic and refuses to indoctrinate the kids that way, there may be problems.
