Steve Vai actually played both sides, except for the slide guitar at the beginning played by Ry Cooter. The winning part at the end is based on a Paganini virtuoso violin piece. I think Steve Vai did a great job, not only playing some great guitar but also making it clear even to people who don’t know a lot about music or guitar virtuosity that he lost the duel. The kid does some great acting, too, and does a good job of faking it except at the end when he got lost in the octave-switching and ended up low on the neck when he should have been high and vice versa.
