Appreciation to Michael Ramirez for making the important point that local and state laws are not enough. We need a 50-state nationwide standard.
Someone from Chicago, with strict gun laws, can drive just a few short miles across the state line to Gary, Indiana, which does not require background checks on private party sales at gun shows, internet sales or interpersonal private sales, and bring unlimited quantities of high-powered weaponry and ammunition into Chicago.
California has strict laws about gun shows, but someone can hop in their car, drive up the I-15 to Las Vegas, Nevada, or out the I-10 to Phoenix, Arizona, walk up to a private party seller in a gun show, buy massive arsenals with no background checks (I have seen the videos of people doing exactly that on various news shows), drive into L.A. and commit a mass murder.
It was discovered that the shooter in the recent mass murder in California at a garlic festival in Gilroy simply bought his gun, which was illegal in California, by driving across the state line into Arizona and making a completely legal purchase there.
The recent mass murderer in Odessa / Midland, Texas, failed a background check. So he just made a private party purchase, which does not require a background check in Texas as it would be in more rational states, got all the firepower he needed, and the rest is blood-spattered history.
We need to close the private party sales loophole (also known as the “gun show loophole” because so many of the private party sales are done in gun shows which, in their zeal to protect the rights of terrorists and mass murderers, these anti-capitalism extremists also put licensed brick-and-mortar REAL entrepreneurs at a competitive disadvantage).
