Way back in the early 70’s I was stationed at Ft Bliss and used to watch the matches every Monday night. Yes most were fake, but I remember one time in a Russian Chain match the “Russian” cheated and won. It took 6 other wrestlers to pull Terry Funk Jr off and unwrap the chain from around Baron Von Raschkes neck. It happen like five feet away, if it was fake it was outstanding.
Baron von Raschke, there’s a name from the past. Around 1969 or so, a group of us young teens (13/14) would go to Friday Night Wrestling each week in Houston, so young our moms had to drop us off. The Baron was a featured bad guy for a few weeks. One of our moms was from Germany, and helped us make a poster, in German, that said something like “Go to Hell, Baron”. We’re sitting in the nosebleed seats, like always, when the Baron comes out for the feature match. A couple of us sneak down with the sign, get up close to the ring, and hold it up so he can see us. He gets enraged, and jumps out of the ring. We take off, he chases us. We’re running like our life is in danger (hey, we’re 13, what do we know), he gives chase for a few more seconds, then goes back to the ring. Even better, each week on Saturday, they would broadcast the previous night’s matches, and we were on TV! Paul Boesch (sp?) and Houston Wrestling.
