Here is today’s edition of “Meanwhile, back in the REAL world …”:

Three hours ago, Mike Bedigan of The Independent posted:

“On Monday [09 Sep 24] afternoon, the Trump-Vance campaign issued an official press release which reiterated the claims about the situation in Springfield Ohio, ‘where residents have been left in terror as migrants overtake the once-quiet city.’

“After 20,000 Haitian migrants were dumped in the city, unvetted, via one of the Harris-Biden administration’s unilateral mass relocation schemes, residents have become guests in their own home,” the release stated, going on to allege migrants had been “decapitating ducks… hunting geese and other livestock in public parks — and even kidnapping residents’ pets — then eating them.”

“Vance wrote on X/Twitter. ‘Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country.’”

These gross lies were sourced by fact-checkers to an anonymous poster on X who claimed this had been told him by an (unspecified) neighbor, who had heard it from her (unspecified) daughter who had heard it from her (unspecified) friend, who claimed her cat was missing and “must have been stolen and eaten by the migrants”. WOW!

The reports, it turns out, do not show such nonsense. After a polite request for clarification, police in Springfield were quick to confirm that they had received no reports of pets being stolen, or indeed eaten. The force said it was aware of a viral Facebook post peddling the claims, but added that they were false. confronted by this fact, Vance tried to double down on the lie.

According to Chris Cameron of the NY Times, the false claims being promoted by the Trump campaign tapped into old racist stereotypes, accusing migrants of abducting and killing animals to cook and eat or, in the case of Haitians, using them in religious sacrifices. Trump has referred to Haiti as a “$hithole” country in remarks denigrating Haitians. A news release from the campaign on 09 Sep recounted the falsehoods, which were amplified earlier in the day by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, and sought to stoke fear, saying “It’s coming to your city next.”

Meanwhile, the X account for Republicans in the U.S. House Judiciary Committee — chaired by Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan — shares an AI-generated image alluding to Springfield. With the caption “Protect our ducks and kittens in Ohio,” the image shows Trump wading in a pond, embracing a kitten and duck.

NewsNation reported that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine acknowledged Springfield had recently received an “unprecedented” surge of around 12k to 15k LEGAL Haitian immigrants, not 20,000 nor unlawful ones as claimed by Vance.

Lies, LIES, lies. Once again, Trump and his VP toady Vance, who is the junior Senator from Ohio, are caught out telling lies. Vance has tried since to backpedal his statements.

NewsNation informal poll 10 Sep 24:

How likely, if at all, is it that you would vote for former President Trump in the 2024 presidential election?

Not at all likely – 54%

    Very likely – 40%

    Somewhat likely – 4%

10 point spread, in favor of Harris.
