Who remembers having a phone bill? Long distance was extra, cheaper if you called after a certain time. A friend’s house had pay-per-call billing, so incoming calls were free, but they paid per outgoing call. His father had a system- he called his kids, let it ring once, then hung up, and they knew to call him. Remember collect calls? How about 10-10-220? RENTING the phones from AT&T? When I was a cop, I’d be in some old lady’s house and she’d have an old bakelite phone that she was still renting from Ma Bell, probably paid for 100 time over.
