At fifty weeks per year, forty hours per week, that works out to $168,000 annually. As of today, the annual salary of a rank-and-file Member of Congress is $174,000 so I guess this was a few years back.
However, a congressperson should be ready to serve his constituents 24/7. So $174,000 per year works to $476.71 per day or $19.86 per hour.
Elected officials should be paid according to the average pay of the people in their districts, or whatever area they represent, earn. So if the average pay per adult in their district is, say, $50,000, then that is what they should be paid. They should also get the same benefits as the average person they are elected to represent. Plus required to work 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year and have to fundraise and campaign on their own time, not the taxpayers.
