How many of you get a letter after filing saying “You made a mistake.”? Which leads me to believe the whole exercise is just to ‘T’ us off. They should just pre-fill out the 52 forms I have to submit and a note indicating, ‘sign and return’.
Pretty blatant product placement again there, Jim.
Don’t forget that a significant reason our US tax code is so ridiculously complicated is because of lobbying by companies like Intuit and H&R Block. In most Western countries, the government sends you a simple pre-filled tax form with the message “We think this is how much you owe. Sign and return”. and you’re done in minutes.
We could do that here just as easily, as the government already knows everything it needs to, but our government allows its lobbyists to write the laws for us.
I’m finally done with my return, but it’s taken manyl days and I’m always mildly worried that I made a mistake somewhere because no human could understand it all. Even Einstein couldn’t, reportedly!
Used Block’s “file for free” and they took me right to the last step and then said “oh, you need some obscure form and we have to charge you”. Figured out the cause, removed it and moved on. Block then tried to sell me multiple products but I managed to sidestep them all. I “was the product” but returned myself.
At this point in time, you are right. The government gets all your income electronically, and they should just send a pre-filled form and tell you to correct it (if it needs it).
I have no idea what that form is, but it looks like you need it, Monty; at least, according to Pretty Fast Tax software, the software you chose ’cause it was cheaper….

Turbo Tax insisted that I file a form that has nothing to do with me. I had to put fake information in it just to get past it.
