DOGS have nails. Cats have CLAWS! Trim dog nails if long. Dogs that take daily walks on pavement or similar may wear down their own nails and not need trimming.
Then get a stiff scratching post for kitty (not the lousy cardboard type). Felines maintain their own nails. But if you do not give them a scratching post then they may select pieces of furniture or your drapes as a substitute.
Weird idea from this comic… A kind of computerized cat toy covered with tiny holes that the nails would go into and each time the cat played with it the toy would be assessing the nails and sometimes trimming them a little bit…
Hmm… No good. That would only get the front paws…
How about a electronic climbing tree for the cat? I can imagine motivating the cat to climb it by popping up treats on top every so often… But I think that would be too expensive… So how about another business venture for Monty? Renting out the nail trimming tree and delivering it to various houses for a day or two each? Comics involving vengeful cats who figured out how their nails got trimmed and taking it out on Monty?
A cat provided with plenty of scratching posts and boards doesn’t need its nails trimmed. It wears them down by scratching as nature intended. If a claw starts to get too long, it can shed the outer layer of the claw. And it will sometimes chew the ends of its claws down, effectively giving itself a manicure. It doesn’t need any help from you.
After reading the comments I begin to see why my mother would never allow any animals in the house. Grew up on a farm and we had dogs and cats, but they were all free range outdoors. They were allowed in the garage during the winter.
Poor Fleshie, time traveler from the far future just wanted to live the high life of humans pampering him even though he isn’t a cat at all. Related more to squirrels than anything else of our time. The fossil record has many gaps over 50 million years from now. Now he can’t leave but finds Monty an optimum partner, his human custodian.

That “board” can also be used to sharpen, at the right angle to the nail’s edge.

I think I see Monty’s problem;

Tuna casserole? My parents once tricked me into running away by serving that to me for every meal.

That doesn’t look like tuna casserole to me. :)

Dear Jim Meddick:“Gotta” is a crude contraction of “got to.” You’re saying “got a,” not “gotta.”

Really smart, Monty.
Maybe your pea-sized brain has been worn down by Fleshy’s sandpapering….
