    It’s an old phrase similar to put your foot in your mouth. The gag is he got Mutt to admit he didn’t know what a shoe was for setting up the punch line. It’s a play on words between the literal meaning of putting your foot in it (the shoe) and putting your foot in it (admitting you don’t know what a shoe is for). Definitely 1940s humor :)
