My guess. This was during WWII when a lot of the players were drafted. I remember a player hired had only one arm. Played outfield, would catch the ball throw it in the air, drop his glove, catch the ball again and throw it to the infield.
Definitely WW II. Desperate recruiting problems and the 4-F comment ices it. There was also at least one midget on an MLB team – not much of a batting average, but got lots of walks.
There was one little person who played one at bat in the majors and that was Eddie Gaedel in 1951 for the old St. Louis Browns as a promotional stunt by owner Bill Veeck. But none during WWII that shows up on Google. Gaedel walked and was replaced by a substitute runner.
I think the joke is on Jeff, stuck once again carrying all the bags, whilst Mutt strides ahead twiddling his fiddle stick. My guess is they took the offer.
Ed Barrow was the GM for the Yankees. Must have been during WWII, when all the able bodied men were at war and kids and even old men here were hired. And even then Mutt and Jeff are salary low balled.
