The lead in pencils was in yellow and white paint on the outside. Red pencils used litharge or minam red lead pigment lead. The only thing that didn’t have lead in a lead pencil was the black lead which was graphite.

Actually, you can’t get lead poisoning from a pencil because that’s not lead, it’s graphite.
