I was reading the 1908 strips yesterday. You may already know this, but this started as a political cartoon involving the Howard Taft campaign and local San Francisco activity. A. Mutt and Little Jefferies were residents in the “bughouse,” and most of the humor was out of my reach. At some point, the concept switched to Mutt’s gambling problems at the track in Saratoga. Interesting stuff.
