@VB, SO FUNNY, been there, sometimes trying to watch the end of a movie ,or some show so tired have to end it
and go to bed and then lay awake for two-three hrs……….
go figure!!
I’ve also been to only two concerts. The first one, i was a bit high and just listening to this band from England that went on to become one of the greatest.
The second one freaked me out. My girlfriend brought me down out of my mountains for a Leon Russell concert at the Berkeley Communiiy Auditorium. We were only a few
rows from the stage and, when everybody stood up when he played one of his hits, I looked back behind me and saw a sea of faces. I was aware of them and uneasy for the rest of the concert..
Between the two, though, i got to listen to four bands that became famous to different degrees……. And as a guest of Boz Skagg’s band at the first one!!
JanCin…..regarding your “Pink’s” Hot dog…….any relationship to Cupids????? They were the best I’ve ever had……but in the last year, they have grown SMALLER, but the chili is still just as good.
Mornin’ all! Air is nice and fresh after the rain last night (finally), dogs are fed and happy, and I am awake (ever wonder how that word differs from “a wake” - meaning a celebration of the life of the deceased?).
Leaky, speaking of birthdays, next Saturday I hit the big 6-0. Looking forward to it!
ML, Pink’s has been around downtown LA since 1939. I found their website www.pinkshollywood.com Take a look at their history page. They serve Hoffy beef hot dogs (with skins on so they pop between your teeth) and XLNT chili.
Slim, I too have been to two “rock” concerts in my lifetime. Went to see Herman’s Hermits when I was 17 (with the Strawberry Alarm Clock as the opening band) and John Denver when I was in my 30’s (no opening act), both at the Anaheim Convention Center. For the first one I sat way up in the cheap seats, but for Denver, we were in the front row down on the floor. What I remember most is for the first one how annoying the screaming/sobbing girls were and for the second one what a cute butt Denver had.
JanCinVV…………Here is an early Happy Birthday to you :-))
Slim………..The dirty birds (Atlanta Falcons) are in town.
I don’t know if it will be shown in your area, but it’s going to be a wild wild game!!! Big rivalry between these two teams.
ML - Thanks for asking. My troubles are nothing compared to those who have been diagnosed with cancer and stuff, but I’ve just been feeling really down lately. I don’t think I’ve ever told you that I’m a minister. After 40 years of this, I’m really getting depressed. Thassall.
Frist concert I went to was Jan. 1971 at Pepperland, in San Rafael. We got in as guests of Boz Skagg’s band, though it was a couple of the roadies that invited us, I remember it was a cold rainy night when we, my lady friend and I went/ It was a long drive from her place east of Sacramento. San Rafael is about a 15 minute drive across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco.
When we got there, the rent-a-cop let us in and, all one had to do was take a couple of deep breaths and they’d be on their way to stoned. I was already high when we got there, something white (pill or capsule??) and didn’t need any enhancements. I just went into the aauditorium and sat there listening. It was the first time I saw a band with two drummers, and the bass player looked very tall. The only effects were footsteps and doors opening and closing
overhead. the band, which went on to become a huge success was “Pink Floyd”.
The second one, which I mentioned last night, was Leon Russell at the Berkel;ey Community Auditorium, which my girlfriend had drug me down out of the mountains to. The most memorable thing there, to me, was the second warm-up band. Three clean-shaven young guys from Texas that called themselves :ZZ Top”.
After that second one I avoided large gatherings as much as possible. I like people, but not a mass of them at one time. I don’t mind in the least being alone, if fact I prefer to be that way when I’m up in the hills. Like I said yesterday,
I get along good wirh Me, and it.s necessary to feel that way about yourself if you’re going to be alone.
Slim, you wouldn’t have liked the fair yesterday. 104 degrees and so many people! When I got home to the high desert it was 10 degrees cooler than Pomona. We got there just after opening and there were no crowds. 2 hours later, you couldn’t turn around easily. It’s ok, though I still had fun.
JanCin Happy early Birthday to you, you young whippersnapper, you!
We’ve had our share of “concerts” at the Hollywood Bowl, and The Greek Theatre, and all over. Favorites were The Limeliters, HARRY BELAFONTE, Johnny Mathis, The Smothers Brothers, Barbra Streisand, (SHE opened for Sammy Davis Jr!!) The Kingston Trio, Henry Mancini, John Williams, and on and on and on!!!! Fortunately for us, they were all civilized concerts. My all time favorite was Debbie Reynolds, and she introduced her long time friend as a surprise. ……Harve (They Call the Wind Mariah) Presnell. I came sooooooooo unglued….screaming, and jumping in my seat!!!! Was he every gorgeous!!!!
davidf who does a minister go to when he/she is down? I’m sure listening to all your “flock’s” problems over the years has taken it’s toll….
ML and Leaky - Thanks for your concern. I’m a United Methodist and theoretically the pastor should be able to go to his/her Bishop or District Superintendent. But the bureaucracy makes that a risky proposition.
@davidf42 - there are several locations that specialize in creating a safe “haven” for burned out, tired, etc. ministers. http://www.fairhavenministries.net/ is one such site - beautiful location, great “listeners”! I am sure there are many others out there that are easily accessible to you.
