Morning, Vagabonds. I just watched the movie “Wyatt Earp” again. It portrayed the OK Corral shootout just as eyewitness accounts described it. The police force, consisting if Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan, and Holliday approach the rustlers in the vacant lot next to the OK Corral. The rustlers number five, Ike Clanton, his young brother Billy, Tom and Frank McLaury, and Billy Claibourne. Ike and Tom are unarmed, although Tom has access to his Winchester in his horse’s scabbard. No-one knows who fired the first shot. Frank is recognized as the fastest gun. Frank made a move toward his gun, whether or not to draw, no-one will ever know. Morgan responded by drawing his, followed in a split second by Billy Clanton drawing his. Two shots rang out, almost simultaneously, with Morgan shooting Frank and Billy shooting Morgan. Virgil raises his hand, holding a cane, and demands the rustlers to drop their weapons. Billy Clairourne runs away. Wyatt shoots Billy Clanton. Ike grabs Wyatt by the shoulder and tries to turn him away from the fight. Wyatt threatens Ike with his gun and Ike runs away. Billy continues to fire, lying on the ground, and leaning against a wall. Virgil is hit in the leg. Tom tries to pull his rifle and is shotgunned by Holliday. The entire battle lasts about 30 seconds and it’s over. Frank, Tom, and Billy die within the next few minutes. Morgan and Virgil are taken to Virgil’s house, where their wounds are treated. Holliday has a superficial wound on his hip and Wyatt remains unscathed. I was surprised how accurate the movie was in this scene.
