I like PicaraJustina’s catch of the price of the hat in the B & E strip yesterday. (I missed that!)
It’s “only” 79 degrees here at 8 a.m., but the sky looks like it’s going to rain. I may walk close to home, or invite Angie Miller and Judy, George & Marilyn to exercise with me in the living room (those folks are on a DVD).
We are going to have a wet day. High 46. Quack, Quack!
Today’s avatar is the Hayden lot at the Albany Village Cemetery which brings me to the tale of the Curse of Mercie Dale:
William Hayden is said to have built the first frame house in what is now Albany, and it is where he raised a son, William, Jr., who went on to become a railroad construction magnate. In 1854 he had this house built by a local contractor, William Steele, using locally sourced bricks. Local lore has it that he had it built as a monument to himself, and “to show the fools in Albany what money could do”. His only son’s heirs squabbled over his estate, which passed out of the family in 1927. It became rundown in the mid-20th century, but underwent a major restoration in the late 1970s, which included a recreation (based on early photos) of the original ell. (Wikipedia)
Mercie Dale a well off widow was William Sr’s mother-in-law and according to the lore William borrowed money from her to build the frame house mentioned above. He never payed it back, even borrowing more at a later time. Frustrated by being unable to recover her money and then becoming ill. She blamed her son-in-law for her decline in health, so angered as to declare she would not be buried in the Hayden lot. As she died Mercie Dale pronounced her curse.
The curse of Mercie Dale: “The Hayden name shall die in the third generation and the last to bare the name shall die in poverty.” And that was exactly what happened. The last Hayden passed away in Waterville, Maine in February 1927 alone and in poverty. The lesson learned: be good to your mother-in-law.
I may do the shopping today so as to be here when the stove gets here tomorrow, I hope, then Monday get it hooked up. (^.^)
Movie “Santa fe Trail” now playing on GRIT, it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.
It was 32 this morning, on it’s way up to 56! But, we’re in for either rain or snow tomorrow. Which means we’ll probably get neither.
I just looked up the fire and smoke map. Jan, are y’all getting any of that smoke coming over from the Sierra Nevada fires? It looks like it is just skirting your area.
Nothing going on today except same ole, same ole. I can wait until the afternoon warmth for my walk.
I am up and running again. My new tablet arrived Wednesday and it took me a while to get it all set up. Still don’t have everything running well, but I am getting there. I am enjoying a bigger screen as I have gone from a 7" screen to a 10". Thursday was family dinner and I fixed tacos with homemade guacamole and pico de gallo (I hope I spelled that correctly).
We are enjoying a sunny day today. It started out at 30 degrees and is now up to 57 with a high predicted to be 61. A nice day to sit and relax after a busy Thursday.
That seems to be all of my news for the day. May you all have a safe and healthy day.
We went out to get a breakfast sandwich at Farmer Boys this morning. It wasn’t quite what I remembered, but it was good! Then we drove over to our storage unit and went through every box in there looking for our trust documents. We could not find them, so they must be here at the house somewhere. Where? I don’t know, and we’ve done a superficial search. What are we going to do if we can’t find them? All of our assets are in the name of that trust!
And now, of course, we are both so sore that we can barely move. I have rediscovered muscles that I forgot I had and Michael’s using a heating pad.
The rest of today will be spent in recovery.
We’re still in the low 90’s (which is why we went over to storage early) but it doesn’t really get to the peak until around 4 PM. In the meantime it’s not too bad right now.
