It was 52 again this morning when I got up, it appears to be little lighter and there are a few holes in the clouds. The forecast is encouraging, cloudy in the am and clearing in the pm, high of 69.Today is the newest American holiday, Juneteenth, celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued).
There was a fellow from Brownington, VT, Alexander Twilight. He was recognized as the first African American to have earned a bachelor’s degree from an American college or university, graduating from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, in 1823. He was ordained as a Congregational minister and worked in education and ministry all his career. In 1829 Twilight became principal of the Orleans County Grammar School. There he designed and built Athenian Hall, (now known as the Old Stone House) the first granite public building in the state of Vermont. In 1836 he was the first African American elected as a state legislator, serving in the Vermont House of Representatives; he was also the only African American ever elected to a state legislature before the Civil War.
