You donā€™t want to feed ducks Wonder Bread, or any white bread. It mashes down in the crop and just sits there. Itā€™s called crop compaction. Ducky can die.

I was in downtown Boise Idaho and I saw a duck. I knew the duck was lost, because ducks arenā€™t supposed to be downtown. Thereā€™s nothing for ā€˜em there. So I went to a Subway sandwich shop. I said, ā€œLet me have a bun.ā€ She wouldnā€™t sell me just the bun, she said it had to have something on it. She said itā€™s against Subway regulations to sell just the bun. I guess the two halves arenā€™t supposed to touch. So, I said, ā€œAll right, put some lettuce on it.ā€ ā€œThatā€™ll be $1.75!ā€ I said, ā€œItā€™s for a duck!ā€ ā€œOh, then itā€™s free.ā€ I did not know that. Ducks eat for free at Subway! Had I known that, I would have ordered a much larger sandwich. ā€œLet me have the steak fajita sub, and donā€™t bother ringing it up - itā€™s for a duck! There are six ducks out there, and they all want Sun Chips!ā€

Mitch again with more about ducks and bread.

I find that a duckā€™s opinion of me is influenced by whether or not I have bread. A duck loves bread, but he does not have the capability to buy a loaf. Thatā€™s the biggest joke on the duck ever. If I worked at a convenience store, and a duck came in and stole a loaf of bread, I would let him go. Iā€™d say, ā€œCome back tomorrow, bring your friends!ā€ When I think of a duckā€™s friends, I think of other ducks. But he could have, say, a beaver in tow.

Chikuku, yes, the late, great master, Vaughn Bode, is clearly a strong influence on Jasonā€™s style, and Jason is a worthy student. Jason has taken the lessons of Vaughn Bode and molded his own, unique creations.

Jason, perhaps you would like to ā€œilluminateā€ us on the influences in your art (and ART it is!)

This has triggered thoughts about my favorite past masters: Hal Foster, Carl Barks (who was inspired by Hal Foster), Milton Caniff, Vaughn Bodeā€¦and the list goes on. Carl Barks, by the way gets crediting for influencing at least one person in an entirely different field ā€“ Archaeologist Robert Carr told me that the Donald Duck adventures by Carl Barks were one of the things that got him interested in archaeology.

MisngNOLA, if a duck stole a loaf of bread, you could always put it on his billā€¦

I lived at an apartment complex that had a vampire duck. People would wake up and find that their loaf of bread had been drained of its insides during the night, leaving a hollow crust.

We all feared the nocturnal visits of Count Quackula.

As Iā€™ve said many times, Vaughn Bodeā€™ is my favorite and most influential cartoonist of all of ā€˜em. His work made me want to be a cartoonist from the first time I saw it, when I was about 9 years old.
