Seems like sometimes OSHA takes it too far – there are signs on toasters in the deli section of my local supermarket indicating that no employees under 18 could use them. These are ordinary toasters, like you’d find in your home to toast a bagel. No rational reason for that rule, as far as I can tell. But in general they’ve done a good job of making things safer, when they’re not creating lots and lots of red tape.
So what has become of the Nancy strip that was scheduled to have run here a week ago today (June 28) but failed to appear in GoComics? Is there any possibility that it will ever run here, even if through a possible link?
One of my uncles owned a Red and White grocery store back in the days when bologna came in long rolls like that – rather than being packed in bunches in plastic. But – in those days, when his slicing machine was out of order – he just got out a knife and sliced the baloney the old fashioned way! In fact, there were THREE grocery stores in our town in those days – and my uncle’s grocery store was the ONLY store which had a slicing machine. The OTHER TWO grocery stores in town sliced ALL of their baloney by getting out the knife and asking the customer how thick they wanted their slices of bologna. In fact – a lot of people did NOT want their baloney sliced by the grocer. Most people would come in an order a pound or two pounds of baloney. The grocer would slice off a one or two pound hunk – and the customer would take it home and slice it there!
