what was the deal with castor oil back then? Isn’t it poisonous?

“Sola dosis facit venenum,” or"The dose makes the poison" is a basic principle of toxicology credited to Paracelsus who said “All things are poison and nothing is without poison; only the dose makes a thing poisonous or not.” Even water, yes. Over consumption of water leads to hyperhydration with consequent electrolyte imbalance that can disable various brain functions, sometimes with fatal consequences. Castor oil? Processed and administered properly can be beneficial. It is commonly used as a laxative, which is the benign effect, but too much could cause diarrhea, obviously not benign. The FDA rates it as generally safe and allows over the counter sale without prescription. There are over a dozen commonly prescribed medicines that contain castor oil as a major ingredient.
