Aunt Fritzi: If we do not remember--- If we let it fade to black-- When it becomes "unfashionable" to study that far back--- If "the greatest generation" becomes a vague cliche-- and the children and their children know not "Pearl Harbor day"--- Then, the shame and blame must to us fall-- The parents-- we must speak--- For all the souls who gave their all-- We've a promise we must keep.
I was 5-1/2 years old. and can still remember the picture of the overturned battleship, and later the Bataan death march and the massive casualties we took before V-J Day. Younger ‘historians’ who claim we never should have dropped the A-bomb can’t recognize that it resulted in a new Japan that we forgave quickly, empowered civilians (especially women), and – like it or not – proved to be our greatest peace-time competitor.
