When I was in the Army in Germany, I had a wind-up Benrus “Baby Ben” alarm clock which about 20 of us in the squad room used to wake us up a few minutes before the duty runner would come through in the morning and get nasty about it.
The clock had a lovely intermittent chime that would play for about 30 seconds before it went berserk and would wake the dead (which we didn’t have any of since this was slightly before Vietnam got really hot).
When it came time to ship back to the States, I decided to leave the clock behind. Tradition in our unit was that anything being given away was to be placed on the floor outside the trash container. When I came back only a few minutes later, I found someone had stomped the clock to pieces. Not a just fate for doing its duty so well.
Sorry about that PS. My ex destroyed a lovely clock of mine that played the Gypsy Baron Waltz - such a gentle way to awaken. I now use a 20W light when I need to awake before daybreak, but I do not shade the windows and low to awake with the sun (I’m a bird person).
