About 50 years ago RCA had a division that sold supermarket scanners. They went out of that business because the public wasn’t ready for them and didn’t trust them. Now I see people lining up to use them.
Much easier to catch pricing errors when you scan the items at your own pace and often the attendant in the will take your word for the price error and do an override. Stores closely monitor how many items a cashier scans per minute and if they are too slow (scan 15 items per minute instead of standard 20) are fired so it is a lot harder to catch mistakes until you get the receipt.

I’ll use them when stores start giving a discount for doing so. If I am going to work for them, I should get the employee discount, at least.
