Before cut, copy, and paste…we had pencils with a built in Cut and…well…re-print, I guess. I do remember those “cuts” being limited in number depending on the paper used aaaand the quality of the erasure.
Of course the question remains, who first discovered that earwax renders rubber erasers useless—unless one is wanting a grey smudge where the mistake was.
A native of England was studying at Brown University in Rhode Island and asked for a rubber not knowing that it was an American slang term for condom. What made that situation funny was it was a large class and the student was Emma Watson. IRL, Emma is as smart and sharp as Hermione.

It was, or is, more messy than scraping the homemade ink off the velum.
