Ordinary Basil. In their quest to escape the crystal cavern, Basil and Louise made it through the second gate into the prehistoric realm of an ice cave. A sentry named Morluk welcomed them. Life Morluk's world was simple but harsh. His people made do with what they had and seemed content. Their contentment reminded Basil of home. Basil smiled at the irony -- his thirst for adventure would be quenched by his return to an ordinary life in Maine. "Come," Morluk said, noticing the children's chattering teeth, "let's get you warm." Basil and Louise were led down a corridor covered with paintings. They were headed toward a warm, glowing light when Basil stopped, transfixed by an image. "Who... or what..." Basil stammered, "is that?" "The Fire-Giver!" Morluk replied reverently. "He brought us the gift of never-ending warmth!" Basil and Louise looked at each other and exclaimed, "It must be Von Rottweil!" Morluk smiled, "The Fire-Giver said the arrival of strangers would foretell his return...
