About 100 years ago when my mother was a little girl she lived in a house on a hill at the edge of a small farm town of Edwall Washington. She said her grandmother would stand on the front porch with her “field-glasses” and gave a play by play report of everyone by name coming into town to the hardware store, bank, mercantile store, post office, livery stable, etc.Early days entertainment.

Visiting my aunts houses when I was little….You just had to sneak into the hallway and pick up the only phone in the house, and listen in on the party line. If you didn’t hear something happening, you heard all the details about when it DID happen, whatever it was.No secrets in Peoria.

It is a shame that we need things like blockwatch et al to keep people from doing what they should not to others. As kids, we would never take from a neighbor unless something was offered. And people never locked the doors unless going away for extended time. As my kids were young, there were some unruly ones on our street who trampled the flowers in my front yard. Now we have to watch out for graffiti etc.

I talked long and hard with Bob before buying my first house. It wasn’t in Bob’s neighborhood. You wouldn’t believe what he said. Didn’t want my kids seeing that.

Isn’t that the lady from yesterday whose husband demolished the house? Bless her heart. She’s a bag lady living in a car-toon.

the sit-com Petticoat Junction, and Hooterville. hooters is right :D based on hobo squatter-towns named after then-president Herbert Hoover—Hoovervilles, in honor of how he devastated the US economy. Those who forget history, are condemned to repeating it.

I live about 50 miles north of Edwall, WA, and drive through on my way to I-90 and Seattle. Pretty sure there’s still a woman with field glasses on that porch. Only now, with night vision, she works two shifts.

Dad used to sit on his front porch watching the world go by (and yelling at folks who didn’t stop at the stop sign – including cops). now that he’s on the tenth floor of an apartment, he keeps his binoculars handy.

The thing about Bob is if that’s the neighbourhood you’re moving to, then he’s the one to visit. Find out what you’re getting before you get.
