Put a safety pin through the thread and work the safety pin through the channel the thread should be going through. If that is too hard, tie a piece of cotton to a safety pin, work the safety pin through, tie the thread to the other end of the piece of cotton and pull the cotton to pull the thread through.
It’s funny the stuff I learned in the Boy Scouts.
