A retired doctor in our India tour group kept wandering into the frame of an Indian family’s photo. When he finally heard his daughter tell him so and moved out, the family shuffled over in unison to get him back in.
His rail thinness did spoil my theory that people there and earlier in China wanted pictures with us because they saw us as talismans against hunger (note girth in my avatar).
The doctor’s other daughter’s claustrophobia kept her out of Hanuman’s Tomb. She lost track of how many Indian babies she held while waiting for the rest of us to resurface.
There is a “second Chinatown” in San Francisco on upper Clement Street. I used to work near there. It was fantastic. I could eat in a different Asian restaurant every day for a month.

In 1966 I found myself in a small village high in the mountains of Crete . I was surrounded by a group of youngsters eager to
talk to and see such a strange thing as an American in their midst …..I wish I could relive that —my 18 year old self didn’t appreciate
how special that was
