Truthfully, I would hate to be a kid today, growing up in the 50s ands 60s I lived less than 1 block from our towns Lake Michigan beach-which never had a life guard. Our town owned a bit of property on a large lake a couple of miles away that we would ride our bikes to. Another town on that same lake had a dock running out about 50 feet, at the end of the dock you could see the bottom, thru about 15 feet of crystal clear water. Neither had life guards.
When I was 10 I walked on the Lake Mich beach 5 miles from our town to a USCG lighthouse. Lots of cottages on the beach, no fences marking private property. Kids could take off early in the morning and not come home until it started to get dark. We played baseball with no adults around, made up our own teams. My 4 kids pretty much grew up with the same freedom. But their kids? Nope, sadly, at least to me, everything has changed.
Our house was on a little driven side street and had a pretty good sized hill in front, then sidewalk, then ‘parking’ lawn, then the street. Dad helped us put plastic on the bottom of cardboard ‘dishes’, good for excellent sliding. Mom would run into the street to keep us from getting killed by any passing cars. In other words, we had a blast!

I thought you didn’t like Cylene, Ruthie. Didn’t think you’d want to go sledding with her.

Besides, Cylene would be bragging about her sled or putting down Ruthie’s…
