I had a couple of outside cats for years. Because of them, I took to washing my hands a lot. It came in handy during the plague years and I still have the habit.
I got into the habit of washing my hands a lot after taking microbiology classes in the late 70’s. My brother’s friend, who was in medical school at the time, said once you take microbiology, you never see things the same anymore. That is true! Germs everywhere. As a result, I don’t get sick near as often as I did as a kid and my hands are always dry!
