It’s odd that the artist William Wells had Bill saying “I can’t work even the break” instead of brake. Why deliberately misspell the word, or didn’t he know the difference?
Footnote: Arnica was like liniment, applied externally, to sore muscles and such. This bit of knowledge comes from seeing it referred to in another old tale I read in Children’s Digest.
