verne: Do you believe in miracles? RJ: I'm listening to you, aren't i? Verne: seriously. RJ: No. Verne: so you don't believe in the supernatural? RJ: Oh, I believe in the supernatural. Verne: how can you believe in the supernatural and not believe in miracles? RJ: it's not a miracle when a vampire turns into a bat...it's their nature...it's what they do. verne: wait..it's not a miracle that a vampire exists at all? RJ: Vampires are not miracles..they're curses. verne: So you believe in curses? RJ: I'm listening to you, aren't I?
I really dislike the term “the miracle of birth” because in no way is it literally miraculous. We all know how it happens, even though the distance between cause and effect are terribly complicated. A moment of whoopee, let stand for nine months, and BOOM! a whole new person. It’s still entirely non-miraculous.
Like Verne, I’m puzzled by the perceived separation between the supernatural and the miraclulous. It seems to me that once you open the door to admit gods and devils, you have to let in the vampires and faeries as well…
