Groot was much more talkative when he first appeared as a hostile alien invader in a 1960 issue of Tales to Astonish. He’s been around longer than any of Marvel’s other heroes, except for the WWII-era heroes who originated when Marvel was Timely Comics.It’s been retconned that his species’ larynx stiffens as they age, requiring them to convey meaning through complex variations of inflection in the few words that they say.
