Can’t speak for anywhere else, but experience says to me that both Minnesota and Oregon have pretty good assisted living situations. It’s not so much the companies that provide them. It’s the people who dump their relatives into the ‘rest homes’ and then abandon them there.
If you have (a) relative(s) in assisted living, make it a point to go see them quite frequently. This does NOT mean at Christmas and Easter (or their equivalents), it means at least bi-weekly. See if you can drum up some interest by civic organization members (religious, professional, community, scouting, etc.) in visiting them in rotation as well. Teach your own kids that this is a family responsibility. Don’t just dump them into a care facility and then ignore them, pretending it’s someone else’s responsibility.
Living in a care facility can get very boring. Watching TV or sitting in t he sunlight does NOT substitute for live and active conversation with another person. Being a person who has an active mind that now is effectively relegated to isolation is a cruelty beyond understanding … until you yourself are trapped there.
Please be kind to the aged. Give then the gift of something towrd which they can look each day. In your visits, talk about yourself, your family life, and what is happening in the outside world, not just about them. After all, in your visits and conversations, you might actually discover that they still have considerable wisdom to offer.

Good term. They are in need of assistance, now that they’ve been so long separated by civilization from the realities of their true habitats.

They’ve been living in the woods most of their lives, but half of their home was destroyed to make room for the suburbs.

A lot of "assisted living " is you assisting companies to make money. A lot of them are close to being a scam.

Lewis & Fry do a good job keeping this strip fresh. It’s not the same gag over and over again — well except for the falling cow :-)
