Before he was Santa Clause, he was known as Saturn, and before that he was Cronus (not to be confused with Chronos), both of whom were associated with winter solstice celebrations.

I heard it had something to do with growing up in Rome.

Before then he had to work 365 days a year and was buried in toys.
