Voltaire was a Rationalist and attacked the many wrongs of established religion (mainly the Church of Rome which held sway over France) and mocked the Bible, but he also found atheism unrealistic, if not ridiculous. He softened somewhat in his old age, perhaps seeing or foreseeing the evil results of where his followers were running off to intellectually and socially.
