I think that I read somewhere that the raccoon population shrank by 20% in the years immediately following the release of Disney’s Davey Crocket movies.
My grandfather had a raccoon coat when he was in university in the 1920s. I now live in a place where I can wear it in season. My only problem was storage. Found a good place in Courtenay.
Didn’t always wear a coonskin cap, that’s something you can thank Disney for (and even Disney doesn’t have him in one all the time, just when they have him wearing anything on his head).
There’s always the possibility that a raccoon escaped from a European menagerie, but it’s very likely that Beethoven (who was born in Bonn, but mostly lived in Vienna, because Vienna was where the musical action was) ever saw one, let alone wore one. They’re classified as Invasive throughout Europe even today.

On a sort of related note, contrary to legend Daniel Boone never wore a coonskin cap.

are there even raccoons in Germany (or Prussia or wherever Beethoven was living at the time)?
