There was a Mars opposition on June 24, 1954, a month prior, when Mars came only 35,150,000 miles from Earth. The only times the Red Planet came closer than that since then were in 1971 and in 2003 (34,660,000 km), the latter being the closest approach in nearly 60,000 years.
