Linus stands with his back against a stool. He is reading a piece of paper.<BR><BR> He examines a globe.<BR><BR> He looks at a bnook.<BR><BR> He walks up behind Lucy, who is sitting watching TV. Linus asks, "Did you know that there are three billion, four hundred and nineteen million, four hundred and twenty thousand people in the world?" Lucy answers, "Well, actually, that figure is quite a bit low.."<BR><BR> Lucy turns around and explains, "Just the other night I was lying in bed thinking about that very thing...I came up with a much higher figure..."<BR><BR> Lucy counts off on her fingers, "You see, there's Martha, and Sam, and Paul, and George, and Jane, and Greg, and Faith, and Sue, and Tom, and Peggy, and Jerry, and Betty, and Peter, and Shirley..."<BR><BR> "And there's Marge, and Bob, and Kenny, and Warren, and Lee, and Bill, and Dave, and Mollie, and Sandra..."<BR><BR> Looking off to one side, Lucy adds, "And Nino, and Elaine, and Curt, and Donna, and Naomi, and Raymond, and Otto, and Kevin, and Amy, and Jill, and Meredith, and Gary, and Lois.."<BR><BR> "..There's Pat, and Walter, and Ivan, and Janice, and Ed, and Lillian, and Frank, and..." Linus slumps on the floor with his head on Lucy's cushion. He says, "She's the only person I know who can name all the people in the world.."<BR><BR>

Only around three billion…? Wow. This was only about 40 or so years ago. In a single lifetime, the population of the world has almost tripled. Wow…

It’s more than doubled (6.8 billion) since then, but it hasn’t tripled (10.2 billion). We have quite a way to go before we triple that figure.

Consider just the United States, which had a population of 203 million in 1971. Today we have nearly 340 million. (And for some reason, all of that growth wants to live in San Francisco and complain that there’s not enough housing there!)

In ALL the world? Yeah, there sure is a lot of ethnic diversity in those names. Yeah, I know, it was a different time, and it doesn’t make Lucy racist.
