Never strike a dog with your hand. If they’re doing something they shouldn’t like chewing on your shoes, you were supposed to smack them on the snout with a rolled-up newspaper. It’s not hard enough to hurt and the rustly noise surprises them. But these days, who has a newspaper around the house? Most people get their news online—so are you supposed to throw the mouse at them?

True. The press is distorted enough as it is.

My key point is that the Press has gone to the dogs. I am the type who should know. “It was a dark and stormy night.”

Most TO newspapers aren’t good enough to line the birdcage with.

Actually, the best way to train a puppy is to keep a small soft pillow with you. When the puppy starts to chew something he shouldn’t, throw the pillow at him to startle him. Then give him something he is allowed to chew on (a toy, etc.). I read this years ago and it works like a charm!

A dog trainer friend of mine would tell her clients: If the puppy has an accident, take a newspaper or magazine, roll it tightly, then strike yourself on the head and say, “Bad owner! I should have watched the puppy!”

Just get him used to hearing “No! No! No!” They’ll understand it in time.

Yes, more scary than painful on a dog, it seems. And truly, probably the BEST use of the press. :-)

Tap him lightly on the nose with your Blackberry or your I-phone and say, “Uh-uh!” Uh… What’s a newspaper?

To tell a dog what not to do, is not animal cruelty.
