A number of US pilots flew with the RAF until the US got involved with the War. With an average combat life expectancy of about 2 weeks for WW I fighter pilots, the RAF would take talent wherever they could get it.
Besides, we’re talking Snoopy here. If he could fly a dog house, he could bloody well be British too! 2014 will being with it the 100th anniversary of the start of the war to end all wars.

US had to use other countries planes in WWI, for they did not have there own.
