The original printing of this strip back in 1967 had no SCHULZ signature in it – See “You’re Something Else, Charlie Brown”, “Sandlot Peanuts”, and even The Complete Peanuts 1967-1968 volume.
I think this typified the book written after Sparky’s death, which really centered around Charlie Brown and the depressing, yet dour life that the artist created in the character of CB. Shulz did many things in his life to cover up the depression that he had and the character took a life of its own to help cover that depression up. It was an odd mixture, but one that eventually brough smiles and love too, which somewhat happy yet complex.
@keare: yesterday’s strip: That’s a GREAT attitude to have! After all, it’s just a game! And the Cubs WILL win a World Series one of these years, probably sooner rather than later, and then win a few more after that just like my Sox have. Good luck to your Cubs next year and into the future! (“Let’s play two”)

The team really lets him down without showing their own regret.

@Charlie_Brown
Play with/for the other team instead of that group of so-called friends you have.

Charlie Brown is angry and upset. He needs time alone to think and have a good cry. Tomorrow will be a better day.

The “close, caring friend” might be hard to come by. I don’t think trying to kick the football is going to help matters.

I must say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen CB this depressed before.

I didn’t know that, I haven’t even checked any online or library July 1967 newspapers to make sure of that…
