I “failed” first grade, but that’s because my teacher and principal wanted to hold me back on purpose. They said I had a speech impediment and then put me in the slower classes even though I was fine. Basically Richmond Public Schools sucked in 1996
The first two years of school were the hardest years of all my years of education. I expected that I would learn how to count, read and write, but no such luck, what I had to do was not even near to Sally’s task, drawing a farm.
I remember getting in trouble in first grade for being a smart a$$. I drew a triangle in the middle of a page full of scribbling. When asked, I told the teacher it was a sailboat in a storm. I was sent to the office & my parents were called. Apparently it was something in the way I answered the teacher. I was serious…it was a sailboat in a storm…she should have been able to see that!
I was often terrified in early school days. Everybody else always seemed to know what was going on but not me…I mean “I”. Especially perforations. I couldn’t get the perforations in my workbook (yes, a workbook in 1st grade; I went to a parochial school in the late 50s) to tear cleanly. My 1st grade teacher was a nun who strongly resembled the monolith from “2001: A Space Odyssey” and I was scared to death of tearing a page. But I tell you what….all those bills with those little perforated tear-off thingys — I LAUGH at them today because of my early education.

First grade art? Cow legs are simple then, just draw stick legs.

Some of our first grade’s assignments are just so pointless. Though I feel sad for Sally for not knowing what a farm is.

It is hard to draw a cow, though

My dad was in the US Air Force. I was born in Germany and failed the 1st grade because I could not speak English.

Oh Sally.
Don’t take it to heart that you are failing art.
Yes, I did intend to rhyme.
